The poem explores the thin line between reality, imagination, grief, and delusion. It portrays someone who sees beauty, hope, power, and possibilities in situations others consider hopeless or broken.

Lyrics

I wear a crown of paper, but it shines like gold,
The empty room bows low to a throne only I hold.
Letters arrive daily from hands turned to dust,
I read the heat of ink and call it sacred trust.

The portrait blinks at midnight, her lips form my name,
You see canvas and shadow. I see breath and flame.
You hand me blueprints marked with ruin and red,
I walk marble arches that only live in my head.

The radio’s been silent for weeks, a box of dust and wire,
Yet her voice cuts through static and sets my thoughts on fire.
The docks are rotting timber, the sea has gone away,
I polish brass and wait because I know his ship will stay.

Ashes scatter black across the floor where stories died,
I lift the manuscript and read each word with pride.
You press your palm to the glass and beg me to come through,
You call it a prison. I call it a sky impossibly blue.

The neighborhood is bright with children’s laughing play,
You pull the shades and whisper, “The spies are here today.
The doctor rolls his sleeves and shows the flatline tone,
I tap the steel beneath my skin and know I’m not alone.

The lawyer closes the file and says there’s nothing left,
I pocket keys to mansions that your doubt has never kept.
The theater seats are torn, the curtain hangs in shreds,
I hear the orchestra tuning in the music in my head.

The grandfather clock is broken, frozen at a past,
I hear it ticking perfect in the rhythm that will last.
You bundle up for autumn, shiver at the frost,
I wear my linen in the summer that I’ve never lost.

The hospital is quiet, machines all still and gray,
You bow your head and weep. I breathe and choose to stay.
So shout until your voice goes thin against the pane,
Call it delusion. Call it grief. Call it what you will.
You see a wall.
I see a door.
You see an end.
I see a kingdom, and I am already walking through it.
