This poem narrates how words gives us the chance to break free from emotional cages and trauma.

Paroles

I now know why the caged bird sing
Because I bet that no one in the world can ever truly understand the pain of having a childhood overrided,
Of having an innocence exploited
Of doing the adult thing before she became an adult
And, those moments when she is like a deer caught in the headlights sticking out looking for someone to talk to or someone who can talk on her behalf
There was this little one that wanted to scream and cry, but finds herself cold and numb instead.

This is torture. Being raised to survive alone, causing her to always be on the alert of perceived impending danger by the unknown
The wreck and shadow it casted for a lifetime
Leaving her believing she is damaged and irreparable
That pain of suppressing emotions as a helpless defence mechanism was such a life-sentence, it just won't disappear, she is forced to make space for it, subconsciously carry it wherever she goes
And trying to maintain a sense of normality until she no longer can

Each trauma made her who she is, not healing, never becoming whole again
She was so used of wearing this bruise here and there and carrying this huge monstrosity around
Until she found the words in the depths of solitude
And, like the caged bird, she has gained wings to step back and lick her wound
To cope with the tears, to dull the pain, to get the strength to pull herself up the floor after a beating
She has gained wings to live above what she can't change, to become a better person, to escape the reality and live on the freedom that it provides while dwelling in the imaginary that everything that haunts her, becomes a mirage
And, that's more than enough to sustain her.
