A poem that talks about “ Still learning how to stay connected while learning how to survive”
Sorry, I Didn’t Text Again by Abraham Amusan

Sorry, I didn’t text again.

Not because I forgot you
Not because your name stopped feeling familiar
on my phone
But because somewhere between yesterday
and today,
silence became easier
than explaining myself.

Your chat is still there…
A small room
I visit when the world becomes too loud.

Sometimes I open it,
stare at the empty space,
and wait for the blinking cursor
to say what I cannot
But it never does.

Sorry, I didn’t text again.

Life has been a collection
of low batteries and heavy expectations
Every morning asks me
to become someone stronger.

Every night reminds me
of everything I could not finish
The streets have been loud lately
Generators arguing with darkness.

Neighbours negotiating survival
People carrying tomorrow
with tired hands.
And somewhere inside all that noise,
I have been learning
how to disappear quietly.

You asked me if I was okay.
I saw the message.
I carried it like a small light.
But I did not know how to answer.
Because “I’m fine”
has become a language
I speak too well.
A sentence that protects people
from the truth I do not know how to explain.

There is a version of me
that still writes to you.
Long messages.
Honest messages.
Words that begin with
“I hope you understand…”
and end with
“I am trying.”

But somewhere between writing and sending,
fear arrives.
Responsibilities interrupt.
Courage becomes tired.
And the message becomes another thing
left unfinished.

Sorry, I didn’t text again.

I was not trying to disappear from you
I was trying to find myself
in a season where even my own thoughts
felt unfamiliar.

My mother’s voice calls me
towards responsibilities
My dreams wait patiently
for my attention
My mind becomes a room
I am still learning how to clean.

So if my silence felt like distance,
please know—
some people become quiet
not because they care less,
but because they are carrying more
than they know how to say.

And if you ever wonder
where I went,
look between the messages.
look between the words left unsent.

That is where I was.
Still caring.
Still hoping.
Still learning how to stay connected
while learning how to survive.
